Herbert L. Smulls was executed by the state of Missouri on January 29, 2014. Herbert was executed at 10:20 pm CST, inside the execution chamber at the Eastern Reception, Diagnostic, and Corrections Center in Bonne Terre, Missouri. Herbert was 56 years of age. He was executed for the murder of 51-year-old Stephen Honickman during the robbery of a jewelry store owned by Stephen and his wife. Stephen’s wife, Florence Honickman, was also present during the crime. Florence was injured but survived.
As a child, Herbert was raised by an adoptive father after his own father abandoned him. Herbert failed to complete his high-school education. Herbert has previously served time for robbery. Herbert was unemployed at the time of robbery, alleging that a disability made it difficult to find employment.
