Context and Meaning: For seven days a nights, Job’s friends sat with him, not saying a word, waiting for Job to speak.  When Job finally speaks, he curses the day of his birth, wishing he had died instead of lived.  It is Job’s darkest hour.  In verse 23, we are given a stark contrast of perception.  Job laments that God has hedged him in, the exact same complaint Satan made two chapters earlier (Job 1:10)!  In chapter 4, Eliphaz responds to Job, acknowledging that Job has done much good throughout his life.  Eliphaz then introduces the first half of the repeating theme throughout the book: this misery and torment has been brought upon Job because he has sinned.
