Daily Bible Reading for January 19, 2014, With Commentary: Romans 7-8
Context and Meaning: One of the issues between Jewish Christians and Gentile Christians is the following of Mosaic Law. Jewish Christians insisted that it must be followed by all. In the beginning of chapter 7, Paul explains that just as death releases a woman from her marriage vow, so too does Jesus' death release all believers (regardless of prior heritage) from all the restrictions of Jewish law. However, believers are not free to live their lives however they want. Mosiac Law was to atone for sin; Christ was the ultimate sacrifice, the ultimate atonement for all sin – past, present, and future. As a follower of Christ, they should strive to live as Christ lived and live in a way that is pleasing to the Lord, free from slavery to sin.
