Context and Meaning: In our final reading for Judges, we see how Israel has degraded. They worshipped idols instead of the Lord. They acted only to please themselves. They lacked integrity. Moral corruption had spread throughout all of Israel, as today's reading takes place among two tribes in the heart of Israel. Today's reading easily divides into two stories: that of the tribes of Dan and Benjamin. Evidence in both stories is that people disregarded what was right in the eyes of the Lord, and focused only on themselves. We see in today's reading that sin appears to be succeeding. What?! Success does not equal righteousness. God does not police our every action, immediately correcting us when we are wrong. Sometimes, we need to learn a lesson. Sometimes, as the Israelites did, we fail to seek God's will and God's guidance.
