Author: Solomon; scholars also argue that it is a compilation by various authors
Date: Unknown; the book was possibly finalized after the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC
Context: God, appearing in a dream, granted King Solomon one request.Solomon asked for a discerning heart.Because such a choice was wise, God granted him astounding wisdom and a discerning heart.Yet, as Solomon showed, being wise does not mean you will always make the right decision. For this reason, it is important to continually study, to continually remind ourselves of what is right in the eyes of the Lord.Proverbs is a book which offers wisdom if studied. It is a book that is applicable in any time period, as much today as when it was written.Solomon introduces the book with a claim of authorship and a description of purpose of the book (1-7).He warns against being enticed by criminals, against those who do not follow and serve the Lord (8-19).Finally, He warns about rejecting wisdom (20-33).In today's world, we judge other by their appearance, the cars they drive, the close they wear, the homes they live in, and how much they make. That is a fool's way. That is a simpleton's way.And in the end, it will mean nothing.
