Author: Obadiah, a prophet
Context: Obadiah is the shortest book in the Bible. It lists the charge against Edom (1-9), the crime of Edom (10-14), Edom’s punishment (15-16), and tells of the restoration of Israel (17-21). This book also provides a warning against pride. Pride is an attitude that declares you do not need God in your life. Esau was prideful, willing to trade his God-given birthright for a bowl of soup. Pride has and will lead to the downfall of many individuals and nations. Are you prideful in your life?
World History: Nothing is known about Obadiah other than he was a prophet. He is one of four prophets about which we know nothing (the other three being Habakuk, Haggai, and Malachi). Edom, that nation prophesied against in by Obadiah, lies to the south of Israel and Jerusalem. Edomites are descendants of Esau, brother of Jacob.
