Date: Shortly before entering the Promised Land and Moses’ death
Context: This book was written for a generation that was not present at Mt. Sinai. It is Moses’ final instructions, shortly before they entered the Promised Land, without Moses to guide them any longer. The first three chapters, today’s reading, recounts some of the significant events experienced by the Israelites since they had left Egypt. The Israelites are in the same place they were 40 years ago, ready to enter the Promised Land. Forty years ago, they lacked the faith in the Lord to enter. By recounting the history of Israel, Moses is encouraging them not the make the same mistake twice. What can you learn by reviewing Israel’s history?
