Context: Today’s reading contains Moses’ final instructions to the Israelites before they cross over into the Promised Land. These instructions are not new. Moses has told them to the Israelites previously. He reiterates them here because they are important. In chapter 4, Moses instructs the Israelites to be obedient to the Lord. They have already experienced what can happen when they disobey the Lord. They are not to worship any other gods. The Lord God is greater than any false gods they can create Moses reminds them of all that they have seen of the Lord’s power and how He has cared for them throughout their desert journey. Moses also establishes cities of refuge. Moses again states the 10 Commandments, given to him by the Lord upon Mt. Sinai. We are not only to hear the commandments, but to learn them and live them. Chapter 6 stresses the importance of loving the Lord God and how He loves His children.
