Context: Paul continues to warn the Jews that simply being a Jew and following Mosaic Law will not save them. Sin is sin, whether you are a Jew or a Gentile. Jesus Christ came and died on the cross for the salvation of all. Accepting Christ’s sacrifice will provide salvation. Using the example of Abraham, Paul demonstrates that it is our faith that saves us and makes us righteous before the Lord, not our works or obedience to the law. Abraham was credited as being righteous before he was circumcised. Circumcision was a major point of contention between the Jews and Gentiles and Paul was pointing out that circumcision did not equal salvation, or vice versa. Abraham was credited as righteous because of his faith, as are we.
