Context: Today’s passage is more commonly known as the Sermon on the Mount. It is aptly named, as Jesus goes up on a mountainside and teaches in a manner that those listening had never heard before. As stated at the end of chapter 7, Jesus “taught as one who had authority.” And indeed He did! Jesus was the Son of God. He had authority where no one else did. Jesus’ teachings are clear and definitive; there is no compromise. Jesus begins His sermon with the Beatitudes. Read our in depth study of them here. Jesus then goes on to teach about the law and provides clarification on many of the laws common to those who were listening. He provides instructions on prayer (more here). Jesus then goes on to explain many Biblical teachings, using everyday examples so that everyone could understand. Take your time as you read through today’s passage and absorb all that Jesus is saying.
