Context: After confirming His covenant with the Israelites, the Lord gives Moses instructions for building a portable tabernacle. The people were instructed as what offerings to contribute to the tabernacle. Moses was given instructions on how to build the Ark of the Covenant, the table of showbread, and the golden lamp stand. Inside the Ark of the Covenant was placed Aaron's staff, the stone tablets inscribed with the 10 Commandments, and manna, provided by the Lord. All these items were placed in the inside the tabernacle. The Lord also tells Moses how the tabernacle is to be constructed, along with the altar for burnt offerings, the courtyard of the tabernacle, and the oil to be used in the lamp stand. The Lord also provides instructions on the priestly garments to be worn including the ephod, the breast piece and other priestly garments.
World History: An ephod is a sleeveless garment worn over a linen garment. It consisted of two long pieces of cloth brought together and fastened at each shoulder with a stone, each of which had six names of the children of Israel inscribed on it. The breast plate is more akin to a vest than a military breast plate. It went together with the ephod.
