Context: David's son Absalom conspires against David and takes steps to undermine him and his authority with the people of Israel. Although David is betrayed by some trusted advisors, there are others who care for him. David also refuses to use the Ark of Covenant as a political advantage. He sends it back to Jerusalem, recognizing that God's power does not come from the Ark. Throughout this time, David seeks to please the Lord, trusting that He will take care of His servant. For such a build-up, the battle to decide who would be king is short. Absalom is killed when several men discovered him hanging from tree. David mourns the death of his son. David's victory is not the end of his troubles, as tensions begin to rise between the tribes of Judah and the northern tribes.
