Context: Chapters 37, 38, and part of 39, describe the building of items for inside the Tabernacle. God had previously given Moses the instructions on how each item was to be constructed. The Tabernacle was entered through a gate in the linen fence. This was the outer court. Through another entrance was the Holy Place. Only priests could enter the Holy Place. Through a third entrance was the Holy of Holies, which is where the Ark of the Covenant resided. No one but the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies, and then only once a year, to sprinkle blood on the mercy seat. Chapter 38 deals with the construction of items for the outer courtyard, while chapter 39 describes the creation of the priestly garments. The priestly garments were Holy because they were set apart for service to the Lord. Once all work was completed, everything was brought to Moses for approval and to be blessed. All the work has been completed. Now it is time to erect the Tabernacle! Following the completion of the building, the Lord instructed the Israelites on how they would know when they were to travel. The Israelites were completely reliant on the Lord for their direction, as we should be!
World History: Biblical measurements are often confusing and many readers fail to grasp the enormity of many measurements, such as those supplied for the tabernacle. It is impossible to completely calculate the worth of the tabernacle, however, various scholars have estimated the cost of only the materials to build the tabernacle to be in area of $50,000,000.00 ($50 million). That does not include all the items inside the tabernacle! No expense was spared for the building of that which would house the meeting place of the Lord!
