Commentary: The Lord had already given the Israelites the 10 Commandments, but in the first chapter of today’s readying, the Lord expands upon those instructions, applying them the everyday, real-word situations. The Lord knew the Israelites’ weaknesses and focused on them during His instructions. The Lord then gives instructions regarding punishment for those who break His laws. The punishments are harsh, meant to deter crime and prevent lawlessness from spreading like a disease. The final chapter of today’s reading focuses on the responsibilities of the priests. The priests had greater responsibilities to follow the law due to their position and knowledge.
