The Bible verse for December 27, 2016, is James 1:22-25:
But prove yourselves doers of the word [actively and continually obeying God’s precepts], and not merely listeners [who hear the word but fail to internalize its meaning], deluding yourselves [by unsound reasoning contrary to the truth]. For if anyone only listens to the word without obeying it, he is like a man who looks very carefully at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he immediately forgets what he looked like. But he who looks carefully into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and faithfully abides by it, not having become a [careless] listener who forgets but an active doer [who obeys], he will be blessed and favored by God in what he does [in his life of obedience]. (Jame 1:22-25, AMP)
This verse makes me think of the Christian church in the United States. Many, most likely the majority, of people who go to traditional church leave feeling they heard a wonderful message. The moniker “contemporary service” is code for entertainment worship. Initially the moniker contemporary referred to music style - now, now, now it can lead almost anywhere. The question that springs to mind is why do we go to church. Are we going because of obligation? Are we going because of family tradition? Are we going to be entertained? Are you going to learn the Word of God? Jesus’ example teaching in the synagogue is a “Bible Study.” Jesus’ life on earth was living the word through His actions. This can only be learned the teaching and study. Bible study, independent - personal study, and corporate - church based Bible study.
To live a Christian life a Christian needs to know and understand what the Bible teaches. Every action and inaction a Christian takes should be based on the “Word of God.” Are your daily decisions and actions based on the teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As a Christian your life should reflect and express a Christian world view. The Bible is your guide to the Christian lifestyle. The life you live is your testimony. Is your life a testimony for Christ.
Hearing the Word does not save anyone! Hearing the Word and surrendering our life to it is salvation. Study the Bible, commit it to your heart. It is the only guide to a Christ led life.
