Commentary: We see a repeat of Abraham and Sarah lying to a foreign king. God, however, protects them, so that there can be no doubt as to the father of Sarah’s eventually child, Isaac. We also see God’s protection for Hagar and Ishmael, who would go on to father a nation. Abraham’s near sacrifice of Isaac, shows his tremendous faith in the Lord. His tremendous faith was rewarded and God’s promise to Abraham would be fulfilled through Isaac. Abraham’s faith is also demonstrated through his lack of land. Abraham was finally content to wait on God’s timing, for the land that God had promised him.
Focus Verses: 21:9-14 What did Abraham do differently this time when confronted with his wife’s demands? What was his reward? Think back to a time when you acted on your own. And another time when you followed the guidance of the Lord. What was the difference in the outcomes?
