Commentary: David is grieved to learn that Saul and his son, Jonathan, a close friend of David, have been killed. David is anointed king of Judah, while a son of Saul was crowned king in the north. Over the next several years, the two kings frequently went to battle with one another. David’s power and influence grew while the other king grew weaker. Abner played a key role in helping David come to power, but ultimately paid for his underhanded ways. The text makes it clear that David had no part in Abner’s death.
Focus Verses: 2:8-11 David was chosen as king by the Lord. Saul’s son was chosen because he was Saul’s son. God does not force us to follow His plan. We are free to make our own choices. In this case, failing to follow the Lord’s will resulted in the death of many. What have been the results of some of your past choices that were not guided by the Lord? What did you learn from them?
