Execution of Bobby Lee Hines Stayed At Request of District Attorney

Bobby Lee Hines execution, set for June 6, 2012, has been stayed at the request of the District Attorney to allow time for more DNA testing.

Bobby Lee Hines was scheduled to be executed on June 2, 2012, in Huntsville, Texas. Hines is convicted of murdering Michelle Wendy Haupt in her apartment in Carrollton, Texas. Around 6:00 a.m. on October 20, 1991, neighbors of Michelle heard screaming and called the police who were unable to determine from where the screams had come. Later in the day, residents of the building were discussing the odd occurrence and convinced the building manager to key into Michelle’s apartment to check on her. Michelle was found dead with a stereo cord tightly wrapped around her neck and dressed in a robe stained with blood but had no puncture marks on it. The Dallas County Chief Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be strangulation and 18 puncture wounds to the chest. The puncture wounds were made with an ice pick found in the apartment that had Hines palm print on it. Hines was also found with several objects from Michelle’s apartment.

Bobby has been in and out of prison since a young age. At 12 years of age, he was arrested for car theft receiving a year of juvenile probation. After violating his probation, he served three months in the Texas Youth Commission (TYC). Two years later, in 1986, Bobby was confined at TYC for six months and received 10 years of juvenile probation. He violated probation in 1987, and received another six months confinement. In June 1990, Bobby received a 10 year prison sentence. After receiving shock probation for 83 days, he was released on 10 years probation.

As a child, Bobby was in special education classes, where he performed poorly. His IQ was measured to be in the range indicating possible retardation. Several former teachers have stated that they believe Bobby suffered from some sort of mental disability. Bobby’s home life was not stable and there was often a lack of sufficient food in the house, many times causing Bobby to go hungry. Bobby’s father was an alcoholic who abused him. A brother of Bobby’s testified that Bobby often received the worst beatings.

Please pray for peace for the family of Michelle Haupt. Please pray for peace for the family of Bobby Hines leading up to the execution. Bobby has not written to The Forgiveness Foundation, therefore we do not know if he has accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Please pray that Bobby would come have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, if he has not already found one.
