DAY 91: JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR
Today our journey takes us to the book of Mark, specifically chapters 5-6. We find Jesus traveling about an area of no greater than 100 square miles, teaching the truth-the truth that was not being taught in the temple any longer.
Take some time to ask God to give you His understanding of Mark 5-6. Read Mark 5-6. Time to journey!
The Book of Mark is the shortest of the four Gospels, and is believed to have been the first. Mark, the author, was not a disciple of Jesus, he was around during the time of Jesus’ earthly ministry and his mother’s home was often a place of gathering for the early church. Mark wrote his gospel, likely with the help of the Apostle Peter, for Gentiles, especially Romans, and it shows Jesus as the ultimate servant and a person of action. Around the time of his writing, Roman Emperor Nero had blamed this new Christian religion for the fire of Rome, which unleashed persecution against the church. It was amongst this era of fear for the new church, in which Mark wrote about the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Mark 5-6: Jesus delivered a man from the bonds of satanic spirits, demons, through spiritual healing. Jesus destroyed the satanic spirits. Jesus revealed that He has authority over the spirits of darkness that roam the earth looking to destroy us. Jesus heals a seriously ill woman and restores life to Jarius’ daughter. Jesus reveals His authority over illness and death. What do you think the people of that region were thinking? Jesus revealed His authority over satanic spirits, illness that attacks us throughout our lives, and authority over death. Jesus is revealing Himself as the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus is rejected by the people of His home town. Jesus sent the twelve disciple out to share the “Good News.” John the Baptist is beheaded by Herod. Jesus feeds the 5,000. Jesus walks on water. Jesus heals the sick. Jesus was rejected by His hometown because they couldn’t see beyond the carpenter’s boy – the illegitimate son of Joseph. Jesus sends His apostles out to share the “Good News”: Spiritual Healing. Jesus fed 5000 men, not including the women and children present, with 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread, and there was leftovers! Jesus has authority over all elements of the earth. Jesus walking on water revealed that Jesus has authority over all scientific laws. A mortal would have sunk. (Mark 5:1-6:56)
As you read chapters 5 and 6 of Mark, consider the following: The Gospels are about sharing the “Good News” with everyone we encounter throughout our life’s journey. We are not to dwell with sin but we are to share the “Good News” with sinners. Have you shared the “Good News” with someone lately? What have you learned today that you can share with someone you know?
