Post Election Thoughts

The Forgiveness Foundation Christian Ministries, Inc. is not a political organization. We are a Christian outreach ministry, encouraging everyone to study and meditate on the scriptures before coming to their own political decisions. We never seek to tell anyone how they should vote. But now that the election is over, we would like to draw your attention to the following verses:

Then [Jesus] said to them, “Then pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.” (Matthew 22:21b, AMP) When questioned about the secular government, Jesus’ response was to respect the government; pay them their due for their part in our lives. Whether we like it or not, the government plays an active and important role in all of our lives everyday.

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. (Romans 13:1-3, NIV) Every government institution is put in place by the Lord. We may not understand why. A government may seem to be against Christ and those that follow Him. Yet the Lord has a purpose for that government, a purpose we may not understand. Have faith in the Lord and trust in Him.

13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. 15 For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people. 16 Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves. 17 Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor. (1 Peter 2:13-17, NIV) As followers of Christ, we should want to honor the Lord with all our actions. The governments and those elected officials in the government, are to be respected for their positions and the laws established are to be followed. By respecting the politicians and following the law, we are honoring and bringing glory to Christ.

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. (1 Timothy 2:1-2, NIV) Finally, but by no means least important, PRAY! Throughout this past few years, we have become a severely divided nation. Pray for our elected officials. Pray for their health. Pray for wisdom and unity as they work to come together. Pray for our nation. Pray for whatever is on your heart.
