January 6, 2020, DAY 9: JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR: Genesis 4-7

January 6, 2020

19Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.   (Genesis 4:19, NIV)

Focus Verses For Today: Genesis 4:19, 23-24

Our journey today, continues through the book of Genesis. We continue following Adam and Eve and their descendants.

Before reading Genesis 4-7, pray for understanding of today’s reading. Read Genesis 4-7. Let’s journey!

Genesis 4-7: In studying Chapters 4-7 it is obvious that the draw sin has on “Mankind” is very strong and deadly. Last week, we saw the draw of sin on Adam and Eve. Today we continue to look at the draw of sin – first through Cain, then his descendants. The first recorded murder in history is when Cain killed Able because Abel’s sacrifice was more pleasing to God. We have our first genealogy, that of Adam. Note that Cain is not included. Cain’s genealogy is listed separately. Sexual immorality is rampant and God’s created earth overrun by violence. God’s wrath builds as He prepares to destroy all breathing life upon the earth. God shares His plan to continue to put an end to all people on the earth, except Noah and his family. The flood, that destroyed all living things that inhabited the dry lands, began.

Today’s focus verses:

19Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.   (Genesis 4:19, NIV)

23Lamech said to his wives,
“Adah and Zillah, listen to me;
wives of Lamech, hear my words.
I have killed a man for wounding me,
a young man for injuring me.
24If Cain is avenged seven times,
then Lamech seventy-seven times.”
(Genesis 4:23-24, NIV)

It is very important to understand that we each have to make a choice. There are only two options. We can seek to live a righteous life in God’s eyes or we can choose to follow the allure of sin. If you chose to live a life guided by your sinful nature you will be cast away from God’s coming kingdom, for the wages of sinned is death. (Romans 6:23a) On the other hand if you chose life of seeking righteousness you will receive the gift of eternal life with God. (Romans 6:23b) What choice have you made?
