Commentary: Today’s reading contains some of the most recognizable teachings of Jesus. Simply stated, Matthew 5-7 tells us how to live a righteous life in God’s eyes. It tells that living a righteous life is challenging. Today’s passage is part of what is more commonly known as the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus begins with the Beatitudes (read our in-depth study here), before teaching about the law, clarifying many of common laws applicable to those listening. He tells us that living a righteous life is a choice: it is an individual choice each and every one of us must make. There is no middle of the road. No one is exempt. A decision, a choice, must be made. Jesus also provides instruction on prayer (more here) and explains many Bible teachings, using everyday examples everyone present could understand.
