Take some time to ask God to impart His perfect understanding of 2 Samuel 1-4 on you. Read 2 Samuel 1-4. Let’s journey!
Commentary: David is grieved to learn that Saul and his son, Jonathan, a close friend of David, have been killed. An Amalekite comes to David with Saul’s crown, bragging that he killed a dying King Saul. This was not true. The Amalekite was trying to gain favor with David. King David had the Amalekite killed for killing the anointed of the Lord and went into mourning for King Saul and Jonathan. David is anointed king of Judah, while a son of Saul was crowned king in the north. Over the next several years, the two kings frequently went to battle with one another. David’s power and influence grew while the other king grew weaker. Abner played a key role in helping David come to power, but ultimately paid for his underhanded ways.
