Day 126: Journey Through the Bible in One Year
Focus Verses for Today: Mark 15:6-15
Ask God for His understanding of Mark 15-16. Read Mark 15-16. Let’s journey!
Commentary: Jesus was taken before Pilate as the Sanhedrin did not want to be directly responsible for the death of Jesus. The religious leaders charge Jesus with many things, hoping that at least one of the charges would be enough to sentence Jesus to death, as the Romans were unwilling to crucify someone on a blasphemy charge. Pilate, however, was a weak leader and tried to appease the crowd instead of following the law.
With Jesus’ death, the curtain in the Temple separating the Holy of Holies was torn in half, from top to bottom, by the Lord. All now had access to God. Jesus was buried before the Sabbath, with the women planning on returning after the Sabbath to anoint His body. The women, upon their return, were shocked to discover that the stone (weighing approximately two tons), had been rolled back and the grave was empty. An angel told the women what had happened. The women fled and delivered the angel’s message to the disciples.
