Day 181: Journey Through the Bible in a Year
Focus Verses for Today: Ezekiel 18:20-29

Ask God for His understanding of Ezekiel 13-18. Read Ezekiel 13-18. Let’s journey!

EzekielCommentary: Chapter 13 and the beginning of chapter 14 concern false prophets and how God will deal with them. The remainder of chapter 14 foretells a four-fold judgment that will fall against Israel. The judgment will include famine (12-14), wild beasts (15-16), the sword (17-18), and pestilence (19-21). The first five verses of chapter 15 contain a parable, which is explained in the remainder of the chapter.

Chapter 16 tells the story of an unfaithful queen, which represents Israel. An orphan becomes queen (1-14), the queen becomes a harlot (15-34), the harlot becomes a convict (35-43), the convict becomes a proverb (44-52), the convict and companions repent (53-58), and the convict is saved cleansed and restored (59-63). How does this parable relate to Israel’s unfaithfulness to God? Chapter 17 contains an undated prophecy, which may refer to the destruction of the Temple in 586 BC.

Chapter 18 addresses personal responsibility. Many believed that Israel was being punished for the sins of their ancestors; there was nothing about which they could do. This belief kept them from accepting personal responsibility for their actions and changing their actions to ones that were pleasing to the Lord.

Focus Verses: Ezekiel 18:20-29 – Today, many people refuse to accept personal responsibility for their actions and the consequences of their actions. It is always someone else’s fault. Why must we accept responsibility for our own actions? What happens when we do not?
