Day 223: Journey Through the Bible in a Year
Focus Verses for Today: Daniel 1:8-17

Before you begin reading Daniel 1-6, spend some time in prayer asking God to reveal its meaning to you. Read Daniel 1-6. Let’s journey!

DanielCommentary: Today’s reading covers the historical aspect of Daniel’s life. After being taken to Babylon to serve the king, Daniel and his friends maintain their obedience to the Lord. They are blessed, as evident by their health compared to others. Daniel earns good favor with King Nebuchadnezzar after Daniel becomes the only person who can interpret the king’s dream. The gold stands for the Babylonian Empire, the silver for the Media-Persian Empire, the brass for the Graeco-Macedonian Empire, iron for the Roman Empire, and the iron clay mix for the last form of Roman rule, which we are living in today.

Of course, there were also challenges to the four men’s faith. Daniel’s three friends are thrown into a furnace for refusing to bow down and worship the image of a king. They are protected by the Lord and unharmed by the sweltering fire. Chapter 4 contains another dream, which was again interpreted by Daniel. In chapter 5, Belshazzar is king, and Daniel, now an old man, comes out of retirement to interpret his dream, which foretells Belshazzar’s death. By chapter six the mighty Babylonian Empire had fallen to the Media-Persian Empire. Daniel’s faith remains strong and he refuses to hide his worship of the Lord God. For such acts, Daniel is thrown into a den of lions. Like his friends years earlier, Daniel was protected and not harmed.
