Commentary: This is a letter from an unknown author, to a community of Jewish Christians who were struggling because they had been cut off from their community in an attempt to force them back into the Jewish faith. The author begins by reminding the reader that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He was not a prophet or an angel, but the Son of God, superior to all prophets and angels. We are saved because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Due to the difficult and lonely situation in which the community found themselves, they were contemplating abandoning their faith in Jesus Christ. The author reminds the readers of the superiority of Jesus Christ – He is greater than Moses or Joshua, greater than angels or prophets. The author also warns against unbelief, which was the downfall of Israel and led to the Israelites wandering the desert for 40 years.
