Day 302: Journey Through the Bible in a Year
Focus Verses for Today: James 4:2-3, 7-10
Before reading, stop and pray, asking that the Lord provide understanding of James 4-5. Read James 4-5. Let’s journey!
Commentary: James begins by addressing something many struggle with; their prayer life. Many pray for what they want and give up when they do not receive what they want. Others, correctly, seek God’s will for their lives and understand that sometimes what a person wants and God’s plan are not always the same. “No!” can be an answer to our prayers! Our prayers and activities should be centered on the Lord’s plan for our life.
James also warns against abandoning the Lord’s plan to pursue wealth. Being wealthy is not a sin, however, it can lead to sin. Those who lack wealth, must be patient and endure for the Lord. In today’s fast-paced, instant gratification, “I want it now” society, these words should be carefully studied. The Lord’s pace may seem slow to us, but, like farmers, that patience can result in a great harvest. In concluding his letter, James once again turns to prayer. No matter our circumstances — joy, pain, misery, or happiness — we should turn to the Lord, just as the prophets of old.
