Focus Verses for Today: 2 Chronicles 35:20-23
Take a moment and pray, asking for understanding of today’s reading. Read 2 Chronicles 33-36. Let’s journey!
Commentary: Today’s reading looks at the reigns of Manasseh, Amon, Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah, who were all kings of Judah. Today’s reading also covers the fall of Jerusalem. Manasseh was, unlike his father, an evil king who sacrificed his children to false gods and placed alters for the false gods within the Temple of the Lord! The Lord sent Babylon to capture Manasseh. Manasseh repented during his captivity and the Lord allowed him to return, where he removed the places of false gods, however, the nation never truly returned to the Lord.
Manasseh was followed by Amon, who was a wicked king, refusing to repent and turn to the Lord. Amon was assassinated by his own officials, allowing Josiah to become king. Josiah led a revival, restoring the Temple and rediscovering the Laws of Moses. Josiah failed to consult the Lord before going to battle in Egypt, where he was killed. All the kings that followed Josiah did not walk with the Lord and led the nation further away from the Lord.
