Texas Executes Gary Green on March 7, 2023

On Tuesday, March 7, 2023, Texas executed Gary Green.  Gary was pronounced dead at 7:07 pm local time, inside the Walls Unit execution chamber at the Huntsville State Penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas.  He was 51 years of age.  Gary was executed for the murder of 32-year-old Lovetta Armstead and her daughter, six-year-old Jazzman Montgomery on September 21, 2009, in Oak Cliff, Texas.  Gary spent the last 12 years of the his life on Texas death row.

As a child, Gary Green was allegedly abused by his father. Gary also witnessed his father violently abuse his mother. He performed poorly in school and was constantly in the bottom ten percent of his class Gary comes from a family with a history of mental illnesses. Throughout his life, Gary allegedly exhibited signs of paranoia and mental illness. He attempted suicide at least once and believed people were out to “get him.” He also claimed to hear demons and believed vampires were following him.

In mid to late August 2009, Gary Green checked himself into a mental hospital. He was diagnosed with a major depressive disorder with psychotic features. He was prescribed medication and discharged. Two days later, Green was diagnosed with bipolar disorder by a separate doctor.

In mid-September 2009, Green discovers that his wife, Lovetta Armstead was attempting to have their marriage annulled. On September 21, 2009, Lovetta wrote a note to Green asking him to move out immediately. Green responded with a note of his own. He expressed rage and the belief that Lovetta and her three children were plotting against him. He also wrote that he planned to kill Lovetta, her three children, and himself.

Green went to their home and fatally stabbed Lovetta. He then drowned her daughter in the bathtub. Lovetta’s two sons convicted Green not to kill them after he told them that he killed their mother because he did not want a divorce. After letting the boys go, Green attempted suicide by taking a large amount of Tylenol and Benadryl. When his attempt failed, Green turned himself in to the police and confessed.

During the trial, it was revealed that Green had previously stabbed and strangled an ex-girlfriend. He also physically abused and strangled to the point of unconsciousness another ex-girlfriend. A jury found that Green represented a future threat of violence and sentenced him to death.
