Focus Verses For Today: Colossians 2:20-23

Today our journey through the Bible enters the book of Colossians, written by the Apostle Paul.

Ask God for His understanding of Colossians 1-2. Read Colossians 1-2. Let’s journey!

Colossians 1-2: The people of the church at Colossae are genuinely seeking a godly life. Unfortunately, Jewish tradition conflicted with the Christian faith, ultimately making salvation the product of works, and not faith in Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul cautioned the church at Colossae to follow the Gospel, forsaking meaningless customs and traditions. (Colossians 1:1-2:23)

Our focus verses for today:

Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? 22 These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. 23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.
(Colossians 2:20-23, NIV)

What is the big deal about following rules and customs? Focus – the big deal is focus! Only faith in Jesus Christ is the source of our salvation. Nothing else can save us from the condemnation brought on us. Customs and traditions, carried out rigidly, may become idol worship. No man-conceived rules can add to or take from the gift of salvation given to all believers by Jesus at Calvary. Get to know Him!
