DAY 142: JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR

On our journey today, the Israelites make a promise to the Lord through Moses to obey Him (God) in all His laws and ordinances: they fall!

Ask the Lord to give you His understanding of Exodus 29-32. Read Exodus 29-32. Let’s journey!

Exodus, the second book of the Jewish Torah and the Christian Old Testament, was written by Moses, whose life we begin to see in this book. The book of Exodus begins nearly 400 years after the book of Genesis ends, and the Hebrews have become slaves in Egypt, a sinful land. Throughout the book of Exodus, we can see how sin damages a person’s relationship with the Lord, and how the sins of a nation can damage the nation’s relationship with the Lord.

ExodusExodus 29-32: The Lord provides worship details to be followed by the Israelites. Instructions are given for the consecration of the priests and components of the tabernacle. Instructions are given on making and using anointing oil and incense, and restrictions on their use. Instructions are given on how a sacrifice to the Lord was to be made. The Lord covered every detail of the construction of the arc of the covenant and how He was to be worshiped. Every detail, in detail, was covered. God is a God of order. The Israelites think Moses may not be returning from his visit with God and urge Aaron to make a golden calf for them to worship. Aaron concedes and makes the golden calf, which the people worship. Moses returns to find the camp embroiled in idol worship. Moses questions his brother, Aaron, regarding what happened while he was away. Aaron returns to visit God, seeking forgiveness for those who worshiped the golden calf. (Exodus 29:1-32:35)

As you read chapters 29 through 32, carefully consider how sin affects a person’s or a nation’s relationship with the Lord God. What sin occurred in today’s reading? What was the consequence of that sin, or what was the consequence of a sin recognized in a previous reading? What sin is affecting your relationship with God? How can you repair your relationship? Are you listening and looking for God in your life?
