DAY 255: JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR

Today’s reading concludes our journey through the book of 1 Chronicles. Our journey today takes us through King David’s continuing preparations for his son, Solomon, to, ultimately, King David’s death.

Ask God for His understanding of 1 Chronicles 25-29. Read 1 Chronicles 25-29. Let’s journey!

The Books of First and Second Chronicles, which were originally written as one book and later divided due to length, chronicles the entire history of Israel up to that point, beginning with Adam, and ending with the return of the Israelites from exile. Its 1 and 2 Chroniclesauthor is unknown, although clues in the text reveal that it was written several hundred years after the return from exile. In the Jewish order of Scriptures, this book comes after Ezra and Nehemiah, both of which chronicle the return of the Israelites to Jerusalem. This book was written to provide hope for the promised Messiah, and hope for the new temple.

1 Chronicles 25-29: King David continues his preparations for when his son, Solomon, takes over as king. King David knew that Solomon would be the one to build the Temple, and made as many preparations for his son as possible, including establishing the roles of musicians, gatekeepers, treasurers, and other officials. King David also worked to order the military and government to allow for a smooth transition of power. Included in King David’s preparations was also the materials for building and decorating the Temple. David would not build the Temple, but he ensured that nothing would be wanting in the building of the Temple. Solomon is anointed and acknowledged as King of Israel, shortly before David’s death. (1 Chronicles 25:1-29:30)

After reading chapters 25 through 29, consider the following: Who is focused on in today’s reading? Keeping in mind who this book was written for, why would it have been important to know this history? How could it help provide hope for the future; God fulfilling His promise to Israel? What can we learn about God, His promises, and the future from studying this history?
