JOSHUA 21-24

DAY 31: JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR

Focus Verses: Joshua 24:25-28

Before we begin our journey today take a few moment to pray that God with bless you with understanding of His word.  Read chapters 21-24, of Joshua.

It is only the fifth week of our journey and we are about to complete the Book of Joshua! Joshua is about trusting God unconditionally; doing as directed and the fulfillment of God’s promise to His people, the children of Israel. God pledged them the promised land, and He gave it over to them.

In chapter 21, Joshua delivered the cities and pasturelands promised to Levites. Remember the Levites performed the sacrifices to God in accordance with God’s law in their respective communities. They were given no inheritance as the other tribes were.

In chapter 22, Joshua releases the tribes of the East to return to their home since the promised land west of their inheritance had been conquered (for all practical purposes). A dispute erupts between the two and one half tribes of the East, and the nine and one half tribes of the West, when the eastern tribes build an altar which the western tribes took as idol worship. A conference was convened where it was discovered that the altar was built to remind the western tribes not to ignore the tribes of the East.  All was reconciled and war between the tribes of the East and the West was averted.

In chapters 23 and 24, Joshua is winding down his leadership over Israel. Joshua summons all the tribes to admonish them to continue serving the Lord.

Our focus verses for today are:

25On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people, and there at Shechem he reaffirmed for them decrees and laws. 26And Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak near the holy place of the Lord.

27“See!” he said to all the people. “This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the Lord has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God.”

28Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to their own inheritance.  (Joshua 24:25-28, NIV)

The story continues that while Joshua and the other elders lived, the children of Israel honored their pledge to the Lord. This is where the Book of Joshua ends. More will be revealed as we continue our journey.

Take a moment to pray. Reread Joshua 21-24 if you like. Take a moment to reflect and contemplate this question. Why is it that the further a person is away from an experience the more difficult it is to adhere to the lessons learned from that experience? This question seems to encompass human nature. Think back to Genesis and remember the concept of “free will.” It was always present. Adam and Eve could not have been tempted if it wasn’t.  Maybe we should relate this question to contemporary lives lived to day. Should the question be posed this way: Does seeking a better life cloud the importance of seeking eternal life? If you are a contemplator, it is time to contemplate.  If you journal, it is time to journal. Godspeace!
