46“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?  47As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like.  48They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.  49But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”  (Luke 6:46-49, NIV)

LUKE 5-6

DAY 148 JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR

Focus Verse For Today: Luke 6:46-49

Today our journey takes us through Luke chapters 5 and 6 which covers a large range of topics including healing, calling the Apostles, teaching, the beatitudes, and parables.

Take a few minutes to seek God’s guidance and understanding of Luke 5-6. Now read Luke 5-6. Let the journey begin!

Chapter 5 of the Gospel of Luke begins with Jesus calling His first disciples, after preaching from a fishing boat in the Lake of Gennesaret. Jesus heals a man with leprosy, and forgives and heals a paralyzed man (to the chagrin of the Pharisees). Jesus calls Levi to discipleship and dines with sinners. (Luke 5:1-38)

Chapter 6 of the Gospel of Luke begins with Jesus healing on the Sabbath, further threatening the traditions and customs of the Pharisees. Luke 6 continues with Jesus calling His apostles, His closest associates. There were twelve apostles. From verse 17 through verse 38 of chapter 6, Luke the physician recites the beatitudes, Luke chapter 6 concludes with three parables. (Luke 6:1-49)

One of those parables is our focus verses for today:

46“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?  47As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like.  48They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.  49But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”  (Luke 6:46-49, NIV)

Luke made it clear that anyone who call Jesus Lord must conform his life to Jesus’ teachings. People often claim to be followers of a person or movement while only adopting the principles that do not interfere with how they want to live. That is not a true following. Jesus said:

15I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!  16So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.  (Revelation 3:15-16, NIV)

Is it possible to be a true follower of Jesus without governing our lives by the life principles which Jesus taught?
