Steven Cepec, Ohio

Updated: Monday, March 22, 2021

Steven E. Cepec was scheduled to be executed at 10 am local time on Wednesday, March 24, 2021. His execution date has since been removed from Ohio’s online execution schedule. Fifty-two-year-old Steven is convicted of murdering 73-year-old Frank Munz on June 3, 2010, in Frank’s home in Chatham Township. Steven has spent the last 7 years on Ohio’s death row.

Steven was raised primarily by his grandparents, who were allegedly abusive towards each other. Steven was first arrested in 1988, accused of breaking and entering, and theft and receiving stolen property. He has been in and out of prison several times.

In late July 2010, Steven Cepec has just been released from prison on parole. Cepec was to be staying in a rehab facility, however he violated his parole and checked out of the facility, without authorization. Six days after his release, Cepec broke into the home of Frank Munz. Cepec strangled Frank, and hit him multiple times on the head with the claw end of a hammer. Frank’s nephew was in the home at the time and called the police after hearing loud thumps and choking noises. Cepec was found not far from the house. DNA evidence also linked him to the crime.

After his arrest, Cepec initially denied committing the crime, claiming it was the nephew, however, in the days following his arrest, Cepec confessed to the crime multiple times and stated that he should be sentenced to death. Prior to his trial, Cepec was evaluated to determine if he was mentally competent to stand trial.

Pray for peace and healing for the family of Frank Munz. Pray for strength for the family of Steven Cepec. Pray that if Steven is innocent, lacks the competency to be executed, or should not be executed for any other reason, that evidence will be presented prior to his execution. Pray that Steven may come to find peace through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, if he has not already.
