Commentary:  David is grieved to learn that Saul and his son, Jonathan, a close friend of David, have been killed.  David is anointed king of Judah, while a son of Saul was crowned king in the north.  Over the next several years, the two kings frequently went to battle with one another.  David’s power and influence grew while the other king grew weaker.  Abner played a key role in helping David come to power, but ultimately paid for his underhanded ways.  The text makes it clear that David had no part in Abner’s death.

Focus Verses: 1:17-27  Saul had tried to kill David numerous times.  Why would David mourn for his death?  What does this passage tell us about how we are to treat our enemies?
