Iran: On April 15, 2019, 29-year-old Abdullah Ghanbarzehi was executed by hanging at Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan. He was convicted on drug related charges.

The Supreme Court has commuted a death sentence to life in prison for an unnamed inmate who has been on death row for 17 years. The court ruled that the individual had such a severe mental illness that he was unable to “understand the impact and purpose of his execution because of his disability.”


On Thursday, April 18, 2019, three prisoners were executed by hanging at Ilam prison. The three prisoners, who were not identified, were convicted of murder.


On Thursday, April 18, 2019, Jafar Hosseini was executed by hanging at Kermanshah Central Prison. He was convicted of murder and had spent the last five years in prison.


On Friday, April 19, 2019, 37-year-old Hedayat Mehrabi was executed by hanging. He was convicted of murder five years ago. His execution has not yet been official announced by the government.



Iraq: The Karkh Criminal Court in Baghdad has sentenced four Daesh terrorists to death for their involvement with the terrorist group. The men were convicted or conducted several terrorist attacks against security forces and civilians.

On Thursday, April 11, 2019, Taha Shirdookht and Kazem Minaei were executed by hanging at Adel Abad prison in Shiraz. Both were executed for murder and drug offenses. They were arrested approximately five years ago.


The Central Criminal Court in Baghdad has sentenced a member of the Islamic State to death. The unnamed man has been described as a sniper for the terrorist group and is believed to have killed several security personnel.



Saudi Arabia: On Tuesday, April 23, 2019, 37 individuals were executed by beheading. All were convicted of terrorism-related crimes. At least 33 of those executed were Sunni Muslims, a minority in the kingdom. One of those executed was Mujtaba al-Sweikat, who was arrested in 2012, shortly before he was scheduled to visit Western Michigan University in the United States. He had attended several pro-democracy rallies prior to his arrest at 16 years of age. Several others were known to have been involved in bombings on security headquarters. Human rights groups argue that their trials were unfair because they did not have legal representation.



United Arab Emirates: Eight unnamed men have been convicted and sentenced to death for the robbery of a money exchange center in Sharjah. The men were described as African nationals. A ninth man in the case was sentenced to 6 months in prison and deportation for possession of stolen money.



United States of America: On Wednesday, April 24, 2019, John King was executed by the state of Texas. John was 44 years of age. John, a white supremacist, was executed for the brutal murder of James Byrd, Jr., a black man, which was considered a racial hate crime.


On Saturday, April 20, 2019, Miguel Angel Magallon was found unresponsive in his death row cell in California. Miguel was pronounced dead 32 minutes after he was discovered. He was 35 years of age. The cause of death is currently unknown, with an autopsy pending. Miguel had been sentenced to death in 2009 for the 2004 murder of Captain Michael Sparkes, Sr., a police officer in Los Angeles.
