Bombay: On Tuesday, November 12, 2019, the Bombay High Court commuted the death penalty for 22-year-old Amir Ajaj Shaikh and 22-year-old Sachin Kundlik Raut. They have been resentenced to life in prison after the court found that the former air-conditioner mechanics had a good chance to be reformed. The two men are convicted of breaking into a home with the intention of robbing it. During the robbery, they murdered a woman and attempted to kill her 8-year-old son.



India: A 29-year-old man and women have been stoned to death in Karnataka, India. The couple married against the wishes of their families, who were opposed to the marriage because the woman married outside her caste. The couple, who has two children, returned home to visit their family members. The stoning was carried out by members of the woman’s family. So called “honor killings” are not uncommon in the nation, especially in rural areas.



Iran: On Monday, November 4, 2019, Hossein Asgari was executed by hanging at Shiraz Central Prison, which is also called Adelabad Prison. According to a human rights group, Hossein was arrested three years ago and convicted of murder.

On Tuesday, November 5, 2019, Karam Sedghi was executed hanging at the central prison in Borujerd city in Lorestan province. Karam was convicted of killing another person four years ago and was sentenced to qisas, that is, retribution in kind.



Singapore: Twenty-seven-year-old Azlin Arujunah and her 27-year-old husband, Ridzuan Mega Rahman could be sentenced death for the torture and murder of 5-year-old child. The boy was killed after being struck repeated in the head and having boiling water poured on him, although he had been caged and tortured with searing hot items for months before his death. The child had also been denied food and water.



Sri Lanka: Jude Jayamaha was convicted in 2005 of brutally murdering 19-year-old Yvonne Johnson and sentenced to death. President Maithripala Sirisena, on Saturday, November 9, 2019, issued a pardon for Jayamaha, sparking outrage. Jayamaha is a member of a wealthy and well connected family. In an attempt to calm the situation, President Sirisena has granted pardons to 267 prisoners, all over the age of 65. The inmates were all convicted of crimes other than rape or murder. No execution has taken place in the nation since 1976.



United States of America: On Wednesday, November 13, 2019, Ray Jefferson Cromartie was executed by the state of Georgia. Fifty-two-year-old Ray was convicted of the murder 50-year-old Richard Slysz on April 10, 1994, in Thomasville, Georgia. Ray’s execution was delayed several hours due to appeals.

On Wednesday, November 13, 2019, Patrick Murphy, a member of the Texas 7, was scheduled to be executed, however his execution was stayed for religious reasons. Fifty-eight-year-old Patrick has been convicted in the murder 29-year-old Police Officer Aubrey Hawkins on December 24, 2000, in Irving, Texas.

On Wednesday, November 13, 2019, Cleveland Jackson was scheduled to be executed in Ohio. His execution has, once again, been rescheduled until Wednesday, January 13, 2021. Thirty-seven-year-old Cleveland is convicted of the murder of three-year-old Jalya Grant and 17-year-old Leneshia Williams during a robbery on January 3, 2000, in Lima, Ohio. Cleveland’s execution was rescheduled due to problems with Ohio’s execution protocol.

On Monday, November 11, 2019, Ron Lafferty, a death row prisoner in Utah, died of natural causes. Ron was 78 years of age. He was convicted of murdering his sister-in-law Brenda Lafferty and her 15-month-old daughter, Erica, in a religiously motivated killing. Ray had spent over 30 years on death row in Utah. Utah’s last execution was in 2010.

A jury in Florida has unanimously recommend that Everett Glenn Miller be sentenced to death for the murder of two Kissimmee police officers, 36-year-old Sgt. Richard "Sam" Howard and 26-year-old Officer Matthew Baxter in 2017. Everett, a former Marine Corp veteran, ambushed the two officers. During his trial, his attorneys attempted to argue that Everett was mentally ill and should not be sentenced to death.

Matthew Nicholson has been sentenced to death in Ohio for the murder of 17-year-old Manuel Lopez and 19-year-old Giselle Lopez, the children of Matthew’s girlfriend at the time. The murders occurred while Matthew and his then-girlfriend were having an argument. In sentencing Matthew to death, the judge was following the recommendation of the jury.

On Thursday, November 14, 2019, San Quentin death row inmate Spencer Brasure was found unresponsive in his cell at the California prison. Spencer was pronounced dead a short time later. He was 49 years of age. Spence was convicted of torturing and murdering Anthony Guest, Jr., a former child actor, in September 1996. Spencer’s cause of death is under investigation.
