The execution of Abraham Sanchez, Jr. was scheduled to occur at 7pm EST on March 7, 2013, at the State Correctional Institute Rockview in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. The execution has been stayed by the US District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania, to allow time for additional appeals. Twenty-four-year-old Abraham is convicted of shooting and killing 65-year-old Ray Diener on May 2, 2007, in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. Abraham has been on death row for the past three years.

On May 2, 2007, Sanchez met with friends Lorenzo Schrijver, Robert Baker, and Emru Kebede to plan a robbery in order to finance their marijuana sale operation. The four took a .22 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver, which was purchased in April of 2007, and got into Schrijver’s Geo Metro to find either a house to rob or a car to break in to.

After driving, Schrijver noticed an isolated house with a light on and an elderly man sitting inside. The four parked and approached the house. Three hid in the bushes and Schrijver knocked on the door. When Ray answered the door, Schrijver asked to borrow a phone because his car broke down.Ray went back inside to retrieve his cell phone. Schrijver took the phone and pretended to make a call.Sanchez and the two others emerged from the bushes, with Sanchez pointing the gun at Ray. Ray tried to take the gun, yelling “No, no, no.”While fighting for the gun, it discharged, shooting Ray in the groin and fracturing his hip. Ray fell down and began pleading for help. Baker and Kebede fled towards the car.Sanchez shot Ray in the chest.

Ray’s wife, Barbara, awakened by her husband’s screams, opened up the door. When she saw what was going on, she went back inside, closed the door, and called the police. Sanchez shot Ray a third time, this time through the neck and shoulder. Sanchez and Schrijver then fled to the car and left. In the days following the shooting, Sanchez told numerous people about the shooting. They testified, saying he seemed to enjoy it and appeared to be bragging about it.

All four men who were involved were arrested on May 22, 2007. Schrijver and Baker cooperated with the police by providing statements. Both men identified Sanchez as the shooter. Schrijver and Baker received 20 to 40 years in prison for third degree murder. Kebede received a life sentence for 2nd degree murder.Sanchez was given the death penalty.
