Richard Allen Masterson's execution is scheduled to occur at 6 pm CDT, on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, at the Walls Unit of the Huntsville State Penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas.  Forty-three-year-old Richard is convicted of the murder of Darin Shane Honeycutt on February 9, 2001, in Harris County, Texas.  Richard has spent the last 12 years on Texas’ death row.

Richard was physically abused by his father and sexually abused by his older brother while a child.  He dropped out of school following the 6th grade.  As an adult, he was addicted to multiple drugs.  He was previously arrested in Georgia and Tennessee for burglary.  Prior to his arrest in Texas, Richard worked as a welder, carpenter, and laborer.

Richard Masterson and Darin Honeycutt, who went by the stage name of Brandi Houston, met at a bar in Houston, Texas.  The two went back to Darin’s apartment, where Masterson proceeded to place Darin in a chokehold to render him unconscious, allowing Masterson to ransack the apartment, stealing many items, including Darin’s vehicle.  In the following days, Masterson was heard to make statements to different individuals suggesting that he had killed someone.

Masterson drove east, making his way to Florida, where he was eventually arrested driving a different stolen vehicle.  A Houston Police detective went to Florida to interview Masterson, as he was the prime suspect in Darin’s death.  During the interview, Masterson confessed to killing Darin.  Masterson maintained that the chokehold was part of a consensual sex act that went bad.  Later, during his trial, Masterson would claim that his confession was not voluntary.

Masterson was convicted and sentenced to death on May 15, 2002.

Please pray for peace for the family of Darin Honeycutt.  Please pray for strength for the family of Richard Masterson.  Please pray that if Richard is innocent, lacks the competency to be executed, or should not be executed for any other reason, that evidence will be presented prior to his execution.  Please pray that Richard will come to find peace through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, if he has not already.
