Updated: January 6, 2019

Scott Raymond Dozier has been on death row in Nevada for the last 10 years. On Saturday, January 5, 2019, Scott was found hanging dead in his cell in an apparent suicide. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was 48 years of age. Scott was convicted of the murder of 22-year-old Jeremiah Miller on April 18, 2002, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Scott had two executions scheduled in the past two years, after he requested that all of his appeals be halted, and his execution allowed to proceed. Scott repeatedly stated that he wanted to be executed, even as concerns arose surrounding the drugs to be used in the execution. Scott stated that he was unconcerned if the execution would be painful. His first execution date in 2017 was stayed after Clark County District Court Judge Jennifer Togliatti ruled that a paralytic drug could not be used in the execution. His second execution in 2018, was stayed after District Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez ruled that midazolam could not be used in the execution. The company who produced the drug did not want it used in executions and argued that the state of Nevada obtained the drug through subterfuge.

Scott Dozier was sentenced to death for the murder of 22-year-old Jeremiah Miller. Jeremiah, an associate of Dozier’s had come to Las Vegas with cash in order to purchase a large amount of ephedrine, which was a key ingredient in the making of methamphetamine. Dozier and Miller met on April 18, 2002, inside a motel on the Las Vegas Strip. Miller also brought along a suitcase containing $12,000 in cash.

Upon arrival, Dozier killed Miller before cutting his body into pieces and disposing of them. Dozier then went on a spending spree. One year later, Miller’s torso, chopped in two, was found by a maintenance worker. His head, arms, and legs were never recovered.

Dozier was arrested on June 25, 2002, in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2005, Dozier was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the murder of Jasen Green. In October of 2007, Dozier was sentenced to death in Nevada for the robbery and murder of Jeremiah Miller.

During Dozier’s 2007 trial, a medical examiner testified that it was likely Miller was shot to death, however, it is impossible to determine. Upon Dozier’s arrest, police recovered a firearm but were unable to link it to the crime.

Dozier was also connected to the murder of 27-year-old Jasen Green. Dozier, then a methamphetamine dealer, become concerned that Jasen was going expose his operation. Therefore, Dozier killed Jasen and dismembered his body before burying him in Arizona.
