Context: The authors of today's psalms are the Sons of Korah. In the Hebrew Bible, Psalm 42 and 43 are combined, forming one poem. They are psalms which cry out to God and praise Him for all He has done. When everyone else turns from God, we are to trust and rely on Him. Psalm 44 refers to past events, such as the Exodus from Egypt, but also provides a glimpse into the future, before Christ returns again.
World History: The story of Korah is told in Numbers 16. He, along with several others, rose up in opposition to Moses’ leadership. As a result Korah was killed, but his children were spared. They went on to serve in two distinct positions in the Temple: one branch became Temple guardians, while another branch served as Temple singers and musicians.
