August 3, 2015: Daily Bible Reading with Commentary for Leviticus 25-27

Context: Chapter 25 addresses the Sabbath Year and the Year of Jubilee.  Both concern the Promised Land the Israelites will be given.  The Year of Jubilee includes the redemption of property (25-34) and persons (35-55).  Chapter 26 outlines the conditions the Israelites must uphold to retain the land.  This chapter is also prophetic as it describes what will happen if the covenant is not kept.  We recently read the fulfillment of this prophecy in 2 Kings.  Chapter 27 is different from the rest of Leviticus.  Leviticus recorded the laws the Israelites must follow, but chapter 27 is voluntary.  It concerns vows made to the Lord.  It is not required to make vows to the Lord, but if done, they must be fulfilled.  Such vows should not be made lightly or in jest.

World History: God ordered the land be given a Sabbath every seventh year.  For 490 years, the people ignored this command.  That adds up to 70 missed Sabbath years.  God is just.  The Israelites were held captive by the Babylonians for 70 years, to give the land the Sabbath’s that were missed.
