Author: John, an Apostle of Jesus Christ

Date: Uncertain, latter half of the 1st Century

Context: John was writing to the church in Ephesus to warn against false teachers and reassure the believers of the truth of Jesus Christ.  John asserts that Jesus was a real man, as real as any of us.  You could see Him, listen to Him, and touch Him.  Because we know the truth of Jesus Christ, we must walk in the light.  That does not mean we will not sin, because we will!  But we must seek out forgiveness from the Lord when we do.  We are not live as the world lives, but to live as Christ lived.  Such a life includes love for our brothers and sisters and forgiveness for those who have wronged us.  We must be diligent in our studies so that we can avoid false teachers who deny the Son of God.  As children of the Lord, we should strive to live a pleasing life for Him, not because we have to, but because we want to please Him, because we love Him!  Our love for the Lord should extend from Him, to all others.

World History: This book is letter sent to the Christians in Ephesus (modern day western Turkey).  Ephesus, a leading trade center for the Roman Empire, was a large and wealthy city.  It was also home to the temple of pagan goddess Diana (or Artemis), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
