Commentary: While at war with the Ammonites, David remained in Jerusalem and committed his greatest sin: coveting and taking Bathsheba and murdering her husband. David did not truly understand the gravity of his sin until confronted by Nathan the prophet. David repented and was forgiven, but was still punished. David’s son also committed the sin of lust and raped his half-sister. David fails to intervene in the sins of his children and punish them or prevent further sins. His failure as a father will lead to even more heartbreak.
Focus Verses: 13:7-14, 21 David not only failed to uphold the law concerning the punishment of his son, he also failed to protect his daughter. His failure ultimately cost him two sons, instead of one. Why do you think David did nothing? Think of a time in your life when you failed to act. What happened? What should you have done?
Only through a relationship with Jesus Christ can anyone hope to separate themselves from the power of sin in this world. Through Him, all things are made new. For a complete listing of readings, please download our Bible Study.
