Commentary: The Israelites in Judah were experiencing a time of peace and prosperity, which led them to falsely conclude that the Lord was pleased with them. Isaiah was warning them that if they did not change their ways, the Lord would punish them for their wickedness. They could not rely upon themselves or man-made objects, they must rely upon the Lord. Only those who follow the Lord will be blessed come judgement day. In chapter 6, the reader is given a recount of Isaiah’s calling by the Lord.
Focus Verses:1:2-20 What is the Lord’s complaint against Israel? What warning is offered? What warning does it offer for today?
