Focus Verses For Today: Mark 7:9-13

Today our journey takes us through chapters 7 and 8 of Mark. We find Jesus’s popularity growing as Jews and Gentiles alike sought Him out for His miraculous healings. The Apostles continued to struggle in understanding that Jesus was not here to become an earthly ruler. The Pharisees, yes the Pharisees, continued their attempts to derail Jesus’ ministry.

Take a few minutes to seek God’s understanding of our journey through Mark for today. Read Mark 7-8. Let’s journey!

MarkMark 7-8: Jesus is walking about the region, sharing the truth about the scripture. Jesus’ teachings contained no man-made modifications – Jesus’ teaching was what the scripture said, without the editing provided by the scribes and Pharisees. Jesus revealed His authority over everything through His healing ministry, such as the healing of the Syrophoenician woman’s child, the healing of the deaf and mute man, and the blind man. Jesus was always teaching – always correcting the false instruction of those chosen to handle God’s word.

In our focus verses for today, Jesus reveals ignoring the true commands of God by following man-made interpretations and instructions regarding the application of God’s commands.

And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! 10For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ 11But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— 12then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”
(Mark 7:9-13, NIV)

Sadly, our focus verses for today reveal the state of our faith today. As believers, it is important to study God’s word. As believers, it is important to know God’s word. As believers, it is important to apply God’s word to daily living. There is no shortcut to a relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We need to study His word and seek His direction in everything we do. That takes time! You are responsible to verify what you are being taught on Sunday mornings by the Holy Bible. How much time do you give your Lord and Savior each week?
