Focus Verses For Today: 1 John 4:9-12
Today, our journey takes us through 1 John 4-5. This letter is written by the Apostle John. This letter was likely written near the end of John’s life. John maintained his zeal for Christ throughout his life and is believed to be the longest-living eyewitness to Jesus Christ.
Before reading, stop and pray, asking that the Lord provide understanding of 1 John 4-5. Read 1 John 4-5. Let’s journey!
1 John 4-5: John warns of false prophets and false teachers, instructing that followers of Christ must always verify what they are being taught. John discusses love; what it is and how it is shown. Jesus has overcome the world. John concludes his letter with a warning against sin, especially idol worship. (1 John 4:1-5:21)
Our focus verses for today:
9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
(1 John 4:9-12, NIV)
These verses echo another familiar verse – John 3:16. God is not just loving, He is love. Jesus Christ is a representation of that love. The representative of love was killed, ultimately so that we could experience God’s love. God’s love has taken the punishment for all our sins, all your sins. In our treatment of others, we are not asked to bear their sins. But we are asked to forgive them for sins committed against us. We are asked to show them love. Draw upon the Lord! Let His love guide and strengthen you!
