Focus Verses For Today: Deuteronomy 28:1-2
As we continue our journey through the final book of law, Deuteronomy, Moses continues to remind the Israelites of how they are to behave in the Promised Land.
Before reading Deuteronomy 26-28, pray for understanding of today’s reading. Read Deuteronomy 26-28. Let’s journey!
Deuteronomy 26-28: In today’s reading, Moses gives instructions for how to honor the Lord through first fruits of the crops and tithes. These serve as reminders for all that the Lord has done for the Israelites. Moses reiterates that the Israelites must keep the commands of the Lord. He warns what will happen if they do not and tells what will happen if they do. (Deuteronomy 26:1-28:68)
Our focus verses for today:
If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. 2 All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God.
(Deuteronomy 28:1-2, NIV)
The promises of a blessed life for following the Lord are not repeated in the New Testament – in fact, Jesus often warns that a believer’s life will be filled with persecution and trials. It is important to remember that these promises made by the Lord were made under the Old Covenant. Jesus brought forth the New Covenant – we were no longer bound under the old, which also means that the promises in the Old Covenant are different from the promises in the New Covenant. The differences between the Old and New Covenant, and the blessings of each, are difficult to understand. Spend some time meditating and seeking understanding.
